Compliance

Because compliance with applicable laws and regulations is an important issue for all health care facilities, hospitals should develop a compliance program. This program should be endorsed by the board of directors and set forth the standards the board believes will ensure compliance with applicable legal requirements, foster hospital-wide integrity and enhance the hospital's ability to achieve its mission. A useful compliance program provides a description of these standards and the hospital's framework for implementing the compliance program.

Topics and documents that may be included in a compliance program include compliance training and education, sanctions for non-compliance with standards, responding to offenses, monitoring and auditing compliance, a code of conduct, a conflict of interest policy and a conflict of interest disclosure statement.
