(Nov. 8, 2024) – While the statehouse races have a few elections within a couple of hundred votes, and counties around the state will begin canvassing before finalizing results and sending them to the Secretary of State, it appears that at the state level, the Republicans in both the House and the Senate have added to the existing supermajority. Both chambers are seeing a pick-up overall.
The supermajority has been closely watched as the chambers look to continue the governor's veto overrides, which take 84 votes in the House and 27 in the Senate. Should there be no changes from election night, the Senate breakdown will be 31 Republicans (up two from 29) and nine Democrats. In the House, the breakdown is likely to be 88 Republicans (up three from 85) and 37 Democrats.
The House and Senate will see many new faces, with 32.5 percent of the Senate's membership new to that chamber. In the House, the turnover rate is just over 18 percent. So, there will be lots of opportunities to work with newly-elected legislators.
