Senate Assessment and Taxation Committee Hears Bills

Taxes (March 3, 2025) – Today, the Senate Assessment and Taxation Committee, chaired by Senator Caryn Tyson (R-Parker), held hearings on the following:

Senate Bill 277 exempts certain qualified tips from state income tax.

Opponents: Nathan Kessler, Kansas Action for Children

The committee chair suggested they will hold the hearing over to hear from proponents.

Senate Bill 195 establishes the Property Tax Task Force that shall study the Kansas property tax system, develop recommendations and suggest improvements to the law.

Written proponent testimony documents were provided, but no in-person testimony was given.

Senate Bill 179 establishes a child income tax credit.

Proponent: Nathan Kessler, Kansas Action for Children

The committee passed out documentation providing an overview of what has been done in this area. The committee also held a hearing on Senate Bill 269, prohibiting a board of tax appeals filing fee when a previous appeal remains pending before the board.

The committee will continue meetings throughout the week.
