Community HealthCare System Builds Workforce Through Apprenticeships and Career Development
(Nov. 6, 2026) – Strategies that address workforce recruitment and retention are essential to achieving optimal health in Kansas. The Workforce Strategies Award recognizes a team of employees, providers or volunteers who have made significant contributions to the well-being, retention or recruitment of health care workers at their facility..
FFacing growing workforce shortages, Community HealthCare System in Onaga is taking a proactive approach to recruitment and retention by building its own pipeline of skilled health care professionals.
Launched in August 2023, the Workforce Development and Apprenticeship Program offers career advancement opportunities that help employees gain new skills while continuing to work and live in their rural communities.
"Recruiting qualified health care professionals in rural communities can be challenging," said Mindy Olberding, chief nursing officer. "We recognized an opportunity to invest in our existing employees and create pathways that benefit both our workforce and the patients we serve."
The program offers apprenticeships for certified nursing assistants, licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, pharmacy technicians and certified coders. Additional professional development opportunities address staffing needs in phlebotomy, billing, rehabilitation, radiology, laboratory services and behavioral health.
Currently, two employees are pursuing RN apprenticeships, one is enrolled in an LPN apprenticeship and another is completing a CNA apprenticeship. Four additional employees are pursuing CNA specialties in geriatrics, dementia care and mentorship.
One phlebotomist has completed an apprenticeship and is advancing toward becoming a medical laboratory technician.
"These opportunities help employees see a future for themselves in health care without having to leave their community to advance their careers," said Cindy Flentie, chief people officer.
The program's impact extends beyond individual career growth. As of March 17, 2026, CHCS eliminated its reliance on agency staffing across its nursing departments, marking a significant improvement from just two years earlier.
"Building our workforce from within strengthens employee retention and helps ensure our communities continue receiving the care they need," Flentie said.
