(Oct. 30, 2026) – Strategies that address workforce recruitment and retention are essential to providing optimal health in Kansas. The Workforce Strategies Award recognizes a team of employees, providers or volunteers who have significantly contributed to the well-being, retention or recruitment of health care workers at their facility.
At SCK Health in Arkansas City, fostering employee connections and creating a positive workplace culture isn't a new idea. The hospital's Employee Engagement Committee has been bringing employees together for so long that its beginnings predate the memories of current staff.
Over the years, the committee has grown to include representatives from departments throughout the organization, with specialized subcommittees coordinating major activities.
"Building a positive workplace culture takes consistent effort, especially as organizations grow and change," said Krista Carrillo, HR and marketing director. "We want every employee to feel included, appreciated and connected to their coworkers."
That commitment became especially important following the 2025 relocation of the Rural Health Clinic to the main campus, creating opportunities to strengthen relationships among employees.
The EEC organizes year-round activities that help employees recharge and connect. Monthly "Snack 30" surprise treats, biweekly "Code Brew" coffee and dirty soda bars, and employee bingo nights offer welcome breaks from demanding workdays.
Larger celebrations include a five-day Hospital Week featuring games, prizes and employee recognition, along with an annual Christmas party.
"Our activities may seem simple, but those moments of connection can make a meaningful difference in how employees feel about coming to work," Carrillo said.
Entirely employee-funded, the committee supports its activities through creative fundraising, including pumpkin decorating and Mother's Day basket contests. Community outreach includes stuffed animal drives for pediatric patients and suicide prevention fundraising.
These efforts help reduce stress, strengthen relationships and build employee pride, supporting retention while enhancing SCK Health's reputation as a great place to work.
"When employees feel valued and connected, they're more likely to stay," Carrillo said. "That sense of belonging strengthens our entire organization."
