Medicare Advantage Contracting Survey Results

Medicare Advantage 3 (June 7, 2024) – In May, the Kansas Hospital Association conducted a survey asking hospitals if they are currently contracted with Medicare Advantage plans and if they plan to drop any MA contracts in the next year. The survey revealed:

  • Thirteen hospitals in Kansas have no signed MA contracts; and
  • Ten other hospitals most likely will drop at least one MA contract in the next year.

Common responses to the survey included:

  • There is a high cost to administer MA plans
  • MA plans authorization and care coordination processes harm patients
  • Post-Acute Care such has skilled care, home health, or long-term rehab care are most likely to be denied with MA plans
  • Hospitals are constantly underpaid by MA plans
  • MA plans are financially breaking hospitals and harming patients
