(Aug. 23, 2024) – Court Overturns FTC Noncompete Rule
A federal judge permanently struck down the Federal Trade Commission's rule banning nearly all noncompete agreements in the employment sector. The rule was slated to take effect Wednesday, Sept. 4.
The court determined that the agency lacked statutory authority to issue substantive rules with the force and effect of law. It further ruled that the measure was unreasonably overbroad due to the agency's "one-size-fits-all approach" and its reliance on inconsistent and flawed empirical evidence as the rationale for its action.
CDC Issues Health Advisory for Increased Oropouche Virus Activity
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a health advisory to notify clinicians and public health authorities of an increase in the Oropouche virus disease in the Americas region, originating from endemic areas in the Amazon basin and new areas in South America and the Caribbean. Health care providers are advised to evaluate and test patients with signs and symptoms consistent with this infection who have traveled to the impacted region.
