President's Perspective – Sharing a Perspective from Your KHA Board Chair

Tammy Peterman (May 1, 2026) – This week's President's Perspective features a guest column by Tammy Peterman, Kansas Hospital Association Board Chair and president of the Kansas City division of The University of Kansas Health System.

Health care is defined by teamwork. As individuals who have worked in hospitals and health care settings for years, we know that the best outcomes for patients and their families occur when care is delivered close to home by a team that works seamlessly and is driven by a shared goal.

"Unstoppable Together" is the theme of this year's convention, and I believe it is the perfect reflection of this year. I am reminded every day that the strength of our state is reflected in the resilience of our health care workforce and the communities we serve. Nowhere is that more evident than in our rural hospitals. You support local economies, safeguard public health and provide care that would otherwise be hours away. Yet we all continue to face mounting pressures—workforce shortages, financial challenges and shifting patient needs—that challenge even the most dedicated teams.

This is why the Rural Health Transformation Program is such a critical opportunity. Through statewide collaboration across five initiatives and 24 programs, Kansas hospitals have the chance to fundamentally transform the way we deliver care close to home, enabling sustainability for years to come.

Even as we tackle these serious challenges, Kansans have a remarkable ability to find unity and optimism. This year's excitement around the World Cup reminds us how powerful it is when people rally around a shared goal. Health care is no different. When policymakers, providers and communities pull in the same direction, we create momentum that can reshape the future.

Our mission is clear: ensure every Kansan—regardless of ZIP code—has access to high-quality, reliable health care. With continued collaboration and a focus on innovation, I believe we are well on our way. Thank you for all you do every day and for your commitment to KHA.
