The week is celebrated during the first full week of May each year to recognize the care and support provided by the more than 6,000 hospitals in the United States. It also celebrates the health care professionals who work in these hospitals, including those in long-term, short-term, children's, psychiatric, and Veterans Health Administration hospitals. The week recognizes the quality care that hospitals provide, including emergency care, labor and delivery, minor surgery, and specialized care.
